The love story between Joseph and Maria Davis wasn’t at all typical. In fact, when they were married they weren’t even sure they actually loved one another. Their families were friends and Maria’s father, wanting her to marry into a powerful and successful family, thought it best for their daughter to be wooed by a powerful businessman. Joseph, who was twelve years older than his bride. Nine months after the couple married they had a daughter, Chloe Suzanne Davis, and that was when their marital problems started. They were constantly bickering and fighting, trying to navigate the first couple years of marriage, along with a new baby was a problem. It wasn’t until they would welcome their son, Joseph Jr. that things would get back on track. Maria, being somewhat young and dumb, blamed her problems with Joseph solely on their daughter and her over fussy attitude. In fact, after the birth of their son, Maria fell more in love with her husband than she ever thought possible. A lot of blame was placed on Chloe from both parents, and that was something that would be felt for years to come.
The youngest son in the family, Steven, would be welcomed four years after Chloe’s birth and now the Davis’ felt their family was complete. The Davis family was well known in New York, often seen on the society pages for their philanthropy work and they would often show how happy of a family they were any opportunity they got. The older Chloe became, the more she felt like a fraud because she knew differently. Sure, her parents and her brothers were the seemingly perfect family but she was always on the outside looking in, never really part of anything but a pretty little girl in a fancy dress to look pretty for the cameras. Chloe was such a pretty little girl that her mother had set her up in beauty pageants, though Chloe hated the glitz and glamor of it all. All she wanted to do was run around with her brothers, preferring to be a tomboy, much to her mother and father’s dismay.
As Chloe grew older she realized that she was so different from her perfect family that she started to rebel, not in the way children usually do, but she became withdrawn, often locking herself in her room for hours on end, wishing for a day when she could just fly away from life. Her over active imagination created scenarios in her head when she would turn 18 and leave home, never to return again. She was different from other girls too; she took a particular interest in science and science fiction, computers, video games, horror, pretty much anything that would stop her from having a lot of girls that were friends. Makeup and boys weren’t as important as creating things, creating a life that was different from the one that she had. It wasn’t until she was 17 years old that she had her first boyfriend, nothing too serious, considering it was some sort of high school romance, and especially since she had always felt like ‘one of the guys’ it felt weird. Her interests were definitely in boys, she just tended to overthink and use logic and reason in relationships where she should have been using her heart.
Once she graduated from high school she decided that she wanted to join the air force, something her parents were extremely against, considering she was a female and they would have preferred she gone to college, study something like communications or some other major they considered ‘girly’, find herself a husband who came from money, marry him, and start her own family. Chloe, however, always beat to the rhythm of her own drummer, and left home to literally learn to fly. Being that she was always had a hard worker, Chloe found that the air force was exactly what she was after and it didn’t take long for her to move up through the ranks. It didn’t hurt, of course, that she was typically surrounded by men, which was something that was comfortable for her.
Her family never called to check on in her, there was no going home, and she really never blamed to. That is, until she received a call that her little brother, Steven, had been killed in a car accident by a drunk driver, two weeks before he was set to go to college. That was when reality crashed in on the now 22 year old Chloe and she felt awful for the distance she had created between her and her family. Her baby brother was dead and she’d never be able to forgive herself for not speaking to him in four years and never properly saying goodbye or to tell him that she loved him. Emotional distressed wreaked havoc on her and she left the air force and returned home for the funeral, opting not to go back because she was not emotionally steady enough to handle it.
After the funeral, she decided that she needed something else to occupy her mind, as well as a job, (even though she now had access to her trust fund, thanks to reconnecting with her family) and traveling was something that she needed. She always had a fascination with flying and decided to take a job as a stewardess on an airline, which was a way for her to interact with people, something that she desperately needed, and also she got an opportunity to fly, even if she wasn’t the one actually doing the flying. Chloe, however, always craved something more and she could never quite put her finger on what that was, exactly. Maybe a change of scenery, as well as a job, would serve her well. She decided to reach out to an old childhood friend, one of those ones who understood her better than anyone, and she decided to move to Boston.
Now that she had some sort of roots in Boston, Chloe worked odd jobs, constantly trying to find her place in the world. It was always terribly difficult, though, because she had no college degree and the air force was the one thing that always seemed to make sense to her, or rather, flying always made sense to her. Chloe knew full well that she was still dealing with grief, though she would mask it with sarcasm, barely letting people through. Those few people who did manage to break through, they were able to see the emotional damage, and that scared her. There had been very few serious relationships that she had been in but she held them near and dear, even after they ended for one reason or the other. It wasn’t easy for her to give up on people, even if they were the ones giving up on her, due to her past experience with her brother’s death. One day she’d find her purpose, she was sure of it.
Now, Chloe is still trying to find her way to navigate life. She recently received certification to teach both pilates and yoga, as working out is a huge passion of hers, and she is hopeful this is going to be the one thing that will stick. It’s been a long and hard road but Chloe is determined to find out where her journey may take her. The fact that she’s remained in Boston for over ten years is promising, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.
